Improving air quality in towns and cities is crucial in making our environment safer, cleaner and healthier places to live. By better managing the flow of traffic, this can play a vital role in controlling and reducing emissions and other air pollutants which can affect the quality of the air we breathe.

Unnecessary start-stop traffic at traffic light-controlled junctions is a significant contributor to excess air pollution. The repeated cycle of accelerating and braking between junctions not only increases emissions in our towns and cities, but also extends road user journey times, increases fuel consumption as well as wear and tear on both vehicles and road, and can additionally be a cause of road traffic collisions when cars stop suddenly.

The ability to change or increase road network infrastructure is not a viable option for many local authorities. However, what if personalised traffic information could be predictive to and for road users, maximising the use of existing infrastructure, whilst improving traffic flow and air quality?

Connected vehicle and roadside signal technology can enable us to improve and optimise traffic flow without the need to build more roads.

Introducing GreenFlow

Dynniq’s in-car speed advisory application GreenFlow, communicates the expected behaviour of the signal ahead to road users. Cooperative Awareness Messages communicate where the road user is travelling to, their speed and current location, all in real-time and completely anonymised.

Dynniq’s cloud platform then processes this anonymised data, transmitting back to the driver real-time information about the next set of traffic lights. An advisory speed appears on the driver’s in car device, with indications of time to green and remaining red time.

This information gives the driver the best chance of arriving at a green light reducing the need to stop at a red light.
